I was very gratified to see my work for AARP cited by Trudy Cameron in her essay in the November 2008, AERE Newsletter. I agree with her argument that the "Value of a Statistical Life" is hard to explain and usually misinterpreted by the public. None of the proposed alternatives are really winners though they do convey the idea of valuing reduced risk which is the point.
